Nostalgia Tiiiiiiime! Donnie Wahlberg and New Kids on the Block

During the misspent days of my young childhood in the ’90s, I was unhealthily obsessed with the boy band New Kids on the Block. I thought I had successfully shoved them out of my memory banks, but today I saw them on some entertainment talk show that was discussing their current tour. I was surprisedContinue reading “Nostalgia Tiiiiiiime! Donnie Wahlberg and New Kids on the Block”

Nostalgia Tiiiiime! “Cry Little Sister”

The Lost Boys is a 1987 cult classic about punk vampire teens (and by “teens” I mean actors in their twenties). It’s funny and original, and the characters are pretty likable. It’s easy on the eyes, steeped in gauzy superimposition and breathtaking shots of Northern California. “Cry Little Sister” is its gorgeous, 80s-to-the-max theme song.Continue reading “Nostalgia Tiiiiime! “Cry Little Sister””

Nostalgia Tiiiiime! “Excess” and Thir13en Ghosts

Recently, I was discussing the joys of rap music and horror movies with fellow blogger The Devil’s DVD Bin, and it put me in mind of the soundtrack from Thir13en Ghosts. In 2001, if there was a song you liked from a movie but you were too broke to buy a CD, you had limitedContinue reading “Nostalgia Tiiiiime! “Excess” and Thir13en Ghosts”

Nostalgia Tiiiiiiime! “She’s Just Killing Me”

Ah, 1996. I was thirteen and entirely too young to be watching From Dusk till Dawn. If you’re unfamiliar, it’s a bloody vampire movie with anti-gay slurs, racism, and many, many uses of the word pussy. In one scene, the protagonists are filling condoms with holy water, and I thought they were water balloons. ThenContinue reading “Nostalgia Tiiiiiiime! “She’s Just Killing Me””

Nostalgia Tiiiime!!!! “Black Hole Sun”

Today, I saw a book with some disconcerting artwork, and it brought to mind the music video for Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun”, which alternately terrified and fascinated me as a kid. It’s the giant creepy grimace-y smiles and lipstick. Some of the illustrations are quite lovely, but most are awkward and unintentionally creepy.

Nostalgia Tiiiiime!!! “Material Girl” by Madonna

Now if you’re saying, what’s horror-related about this mega-80s (to the max!) gem, it was directed by Mary Lambert, the auteur behind the original Pet Sematary as well as the watchable Pet Sematary II and Urban Legends: Bloody Mary. (We’ll not discuss the rest of her filmography.)

Creepy Music Video Time! Greg Kihn Band: “Jeopardy”

I’ve recently read the book Horror Show by Greg Kihn. Published in 1996, it’s a tale about 1950s shlock filmmaker Landis Woodley (think Ed Wood with a little William Castle), and his entourage as they make the best movie a tiny budget has to offer–with real corpses. And, unbeknownst to them, a demon. Kihn reallyContinue reading “Creepy Music Video Time! Greg Kihn Band: “Jeopardy””

The Ramones: “Pet Sematary”

What with all my newfound time quarantined at home, I’m devouring audiobooks like there’s no tomorrow. I’ve read Pet Sematary a couple of times, but the audio is narrated by Michael C. Hall, which intrigues me, so I’m giving it a go. What better way to take one’s mind off a pandemic than with aContinue reading “The Ramones: “Pet Sematary””
